Book Outlet.
A book haul with a twist.

A book lover announces that she’s expecting. Her partner has questions. Viva Media developed and produced Book Outlet’s 30-second commercial, using a comic misunderstanding to introduce the brand’s discounted books.

Answer the doubt behind the deal.

Book Outlet wanted to reach readers who hadn’t bought from the brand before. Low prices could leave new shoppers wondering what they were missing. The brief called for a comedic campaign that would connect with book lovers and address that hesitation.

We developed a scene around an enthusiastic book-haul video and a partner who misunderstands the announcement. Their exchange gives the audience a reason to stay for the reveal, then puts the book count, total price and remainder mark into the conversation.

Keep book lovers in on the joke.

The story starts with “we’re expecting” and ends with another book delivery. Between those moments, the partner’s questions give the viewer a way into Book Outlet’s offer without stopping the scene for a separate sales pitch.

Start inside the book haul.

The opening uses a vertical frame and a ring-light look familiar from book-haul videos. We then move out into the room to follow the couple’s conversation. Bookshelves, stacked books and delivery boxes make her reading habit visible throughout the scene.

Give the price a context.

Seven books, one total and a tiny remainder mark become points of comic confusion. The dialogue explains what the character is buying and why she’s excited about the price, while her partner’s reactions carry the humour.

Keep the meaning in the shorter edit.

Viva Media developed the script and storyboards, directed the performances and produced the shoot and post-production. For the 15-second edit, we reviewed how to retain the book count so the price still made sense, identifying shorter reactions and tighter dialogue to make room.

The delivery included 30- and 15-second cuts, Canadian and U.S. versions, and alternate formats for social. We also prepared captioned files for connected TV. Book Outlet confirmed that the CTV spots were live in October 2025 and that its team had the social assets in November.
